The Basics

REALITY

When talking about technology that can alter a person’s reality, you need to first talk about reality as a construct.

An individual’s reality is constructed from what they perceive through their senses and the way that perception makes them feel. It is important to note that emotion is one of the biggest factors into making successful alternate reality. If a digitally create medium can alter someone’s emotional state, then it truly was immersive.

SENSES

The most commonly associated senses with Extended Reality is vision and hearing. This is because when virtual reality made a splash in the world, it came from the headset. However, there are still 3 more senses that can be altered.

Altering smell and taste is still a more underdeveloped field when it comes to extended reality. When it comes to designing MR experiences, prioritizing visual fidelity and display is what adds to the extended reality experience.

The last sense left is touch. A lot of new technology is surfacing that allows for more physically reactions with the digital world through haptics. Ideally this could be extended into virtual and mixed reality by feeling physical feedback when engaging with digital elements.

What kinds of technology sets Mixed Reality apart?

For this section of the Mixed Reality Wiki, we will be defining Mixed Reality by its technology attributes as we prepare to introduce you to the design and development pipeline of MR experiences.
