Reality:

Reality can have many different kinds of definitions, but we will define reality in the perspetive of the individual. Therefore, Reality is the perception of the world through the 5 senses that one experiences. With this definition, Reality can be changed as you change what the senses perceive.

Extended Reality (XR):

Extended reality is an umbrella term that encompasses any sort of technology that alters reality by adding digital elements to the physical or real-world environment by any extent, blurring the line between the physical and the digital world.

XR includes AR, MR, VR, and any technology—even those that have yet to be developed—that interact the digital to the senses.

Augmented Reality (AR):

Augmented Reality is the superposition of digital elements into the real-world environment. In the AR experience, you can see a composite view of physical or real-world elements and digital elements. While some AR experiences may offer a certain degree of interaction between physical and virtual elements, typically, there is limited to no direct interaction between the digital and physical world components.

EX: AccuVein AR projection tech. This uses laser based scanner of a patient’s vein into an image superimposed on the skin. HEALTH BENEFIT TO AR!!

Virtual Reality (VR):

Virtual Reality the creation of a fully-immersive digital environment. In VR experiences, the physical or real-world environment is entirely blocked out.

EX: Headset video games in a VR environment.

Mixed Reality (MR):

Mixed Reality is the merging of a real-world environment and a computer-generated one interactively. Physical and virtual objects may co-exist in mixed reality environments and interact in real time.

EX: Holograms!

Hologram:

Digitally created light and sound to form digital objects that interact with the real world.

Head Mounted Displays (HMD):

Worn over the entire head or worn in front of the eyes, is a device that uses one or two optics to project an image directly in front of the user's eyes. Popular augmented reality HMDs include Microsoft’s Hololens and Magic Leap which was among the earliest to release headsets with spatial computing capabilities to essentially “map” a digital experinece to a room. The recently released Quest 3 uses a similar visualization of the user’s physical space to that of Magic Leap with a enhanced visual display.
