</aside>

Mixed Reality (MR) is your “presence” in a world created by technology and experience design. In Mixed Reality, you are present within digital and physical elements interacting as one living world.

The term MR fits into what we call Extended Reality (XR): The umbrella concept that encompasses any sort of technology that alters reality by adding digital elements to the “real-world”.

</aside>

In Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, there is still separation of the digital and physical worlds. In VR, digital elements block out the physical world. In AR, digital elements don’t interact with the physical world.

While it is not the platforms or technologies that separate MR from AR and VR, recent tech advancements have made hardware and software a prime factor in the fidelity of mixed reality headset experiences. See Getting Started to learn more about the tech differences.

</aside>

As we will mention in Misconceptions the experience is not solely the technology itself. The Mixed Reality experience is living in the relationship between the physical and digital world. You may have a headset that blends the worlds for you via complex spatial computing and depth sensing software, or an experience that takes you between related digital and physical components.
